Lion - The ransomware attack poses significant problems

The Lion confirms that the cyber attack reported by the Herald on Monday was a ransomware attack - where hackers take control of data or systems and then demand ransom for millions.

Although the company is working to quantify the impact of the attack, it is affecting customers, suppliers and the entire supply chain, according to a statement on its website.

"As a precaution, we are shutting down all of our systems right away.

"There is no evidence yet of a data breach, but we are still investigating all aspects of this important event."

Manual systems had to be adopted to take orders and ship products across the country.

'Couldn't come at a worse time'
Lion is Australia's largest beer brewer, with many brands including XXXX Gold, Toohees, Hahn, Boggs and Little Creatures.

The company said it would seek to reintroduce cyber attacks in pubs and clubs as corona virus controls begin to ease.

"This attack has affected critical aspects of the brewing process. We operate multiple large-scale breweries that rely heavily on IT infrastructure."

Especially for our valued pub and club customers who are in the early stages of recovery after the COVID-19 is over."

It has no effect on milk procurement
Lion is one of the five largest dairy processors in Australia, with 550 dairy farmers producing over a billion liters of milk a year.

But the cyber attacks do not affect farmers, the company said in a statement.

"It has no effect on milk supply from our dairy farming partners or on fruit from orange farmers."
